چکیده
Strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were detected in 1961, shortly after methicillin came into clinical use. However, such strains occurred sporadically and were resistant only to -lactam antibiotics, causing no major problems. By contrast, the resistant strains that appeared in Australia in the late 1970s were entirely different; they were resistant to other types of antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides, macrolides, tetracyclines and, more recently, quinolones, and have spread worldwide, while retaining their virulence. In Japan, most strains of MRSA now exhibit high-level resistance to various antibiotics and therefore pose a serious problem clinically and epidemiologically, among compromised in-patients in particular, as the causative pathogen of nosocomial infection. Arbekacin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic, and is active against MRSA that have a variety of aminoglycoside-inactivating enzymes. In this study, the bactericidal activity and post-antibiotic effects (PAEs) of arbekacin were compared with those of vancomycin against MRSA strain 1936, a clinical isolate. The morphological changes of the strain caused by exposure to these agents were also examined.

Reduced susceptibility to ceftriaxone in Neisseria gonorrhoeae is associated with mutations G542S, P551S and P551L in the gonococcal penicillin-binding protein 2.
OBJECTIVES Reduced susceptibility to extended-spectrum cephalosporins in Neisseria gonorrhoeae has, to date, been associated with three alterations: a mosaic penA allele encoding the penicillin-binding protein 2 (PBP2); A-del-mtrR, an adenine deletion in the mtrR promoter; and penB, comprising mutated alleles of PorBIb. In this study, we examined an association between reduced susceptibility to...
متن کاملCo-trimoxazole versus vancomycin for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia: a retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy and safety of co-trimoxazole versus that of vancomycin in adults with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemia. PATIENTS AND METHODS Retrospective matched cohort study. Thirty-eight patients with MRSA bacteraemia, treated with co-trimoxazole as the main therapeutic agent, were matched with 76 patients treated with vancomycin as the mai...
متن کاملChromobacterium spp. harbour Ambler class A β-lactamases showing high identity with KPC.
OBJECTIVES The origin of KPC is unknown. The aim of this study was to detect progenitors of KPC in silico and to functionally verify their β-lactam hydrolysis activity. METHODS The sequence of KPC-2 was used to mine the NCBI protein sequence database. The best non-KPC hits were analysed by amino acid (aa) alignment and phylogenetic tree construction. Genes encoding KPC-2 homologues were expre...
متن کاملIn vitro activity of an aqueous allicin extract and a novel allicin topical gel formulation against Lancefield group B streptococci.
BACKGROUND Studies have shown the efficacy of intra-partum antibiotics in preventing early-onset group B streptococcal sepsis. This approach results in a high intra-partum antibiotic use. Worryingly, the same antibiotics used in prophylaxis are also first-line treatment for neonatal sepsis, and antibiotic exposure in the peri-natal period has been shown to be a risk factor for late-onset seriou...
متن کاملJAC, a direct target of oncogenic transcription factor Jun, is involved in cell transformation and tumorigenesis.
Using subtractive hybridization techniques, we have isolated a gene termed JAC that is strongly and specifically activated in avian fibroblasts transformed by the v-jun oncogene of avian sarcoma virus 17 (ASV17), but not in cells transformed by other oncogenic agents. Furthermore, JAC is highly expressed in cell lines derived from jun-induced avian fibrosarcomas. Kinetic analysis using a doxycy...
